Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström told the media that Stockholm would try to reach a positive decision on this issue soon. Meanwhile, Finland, together with Sweden, submitted a proposal to become a member of NATO, which seems to have no obstacles to joining NATO, even on its own. Finland resumes defence trade with Turkish company BMC, and there is no clear-cut reaction to Finland from Turkiye.
The Swedish government hopes to resolve the issue with Turkiye
as soon as possible to join NATO this year.
The burning of the Quran and public insults against the
deeply infuriated Turkish president Erdogan, who has ruled out supporting
Sweden's application to NATO. The Swedish government says that the conditions Turkiye set to join NATO have been met. Sweden submitted its application to join NATO in May 2022, along
with Finland. While Finland has managed to sort out their differences with
Ankara, Stockholm has done the opposite.
