The training version of the Akya Heavyweight Torpedo, developed by Turkey with national resources, was launched from a submarine for the first time. Hulusi Akar, the Minister of Defence, pressed the button while the actual ship was used as a target.
MÜREN (Milli Üretim Entegre Sualti Savaş Yönetim Sistemi) means Indigenously Produced Integrated Underwater Combat Management System. The project has been carried out by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) BILGEM in collaboration with the Turkish Navy’s Research and Development Command (ARMERKOM).
