A Congressional committee in the United States approved an amendment prohibiting selling the F-16s or modernization kits to Turkiye. A recently approved US Congressional committee measure would limit, but not completely prohibit, the sale of F-16 fighter jets or F-16 modernization kits to Turkiye.
A bipartisan group of US lawmakers has filed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would prevent Turkiye from receiving F-16 fighter jets if Ankara continues its territorial overflights and air space violations in the Aegean.
The amendment was proposed by Greek-American member of parliament Chris Pappas and co-signed by Dina Titus, Carolyn B. Maloney, Charlie Crist, and John Sarbanes.
The US president is prohibited by this amendment from transferring weapons to a NATO member country that has repeatedly violated the airspace or the sovereignty or territorial integrity of another NATO member country in the previous year.
It also requires the President to state that supplying the materials to Turkiye is in the best interests of the US.
