Australia Begins Training Personnel with Smart Sea Mines

Philips shared the information during the ADM Congress 2024 press event. Leon Philips is currently the head of GWEO Enterprise of Australia.
Naval News reports that GWEO Enterprise is acquiring an unspecified mine from RWM Italia, owned by German Rheinmetall, within the scope of Project SEA 2000 Maritime Mining. The company has developed Asteria and Murena smart mines. What platforms will use the mines also hasn’t been disclosed. Smart sea mines are likely envisioned as area denial weapons for the Pacific Sea.
New generation sea mines feature enhanced sensing capabilities with multiple types of sensors used at once. Some even utilise visual or acoustic camouflaging technologies like Turkish MALAMAN to evade detection. These mines can be deployed from the surface, underwater, and on-air platforms.
Australia has significantly increased its naval capabilities with other projects like Hunter-class frigates and Tomahawk cruise missile acquisition.
