Brazil Launches Third Riachuelo Scorpène-Class Submarine

Brazil announced that it launched the "Tonelero" (S-42), the third "Riachuelo" class Scorpene submarine. The launching ceremony isheld at the Itaguaí Naval base. ICN built The Tonelero entirely in Brazil as part of ToT with the Naval Group. The submarine construction began in January 2015. The first submarine of the S-40 "Riachuelo" class entered service in September 2020. The second submarine (S-41 "Humaitá") began construction in September 2013, was launched in December 2020 and entered service in January 2024. The last submarine (S-43 "Angostura") has not yet begun construction. The " Riachuelo" has a displacement of 1,900 tons, a length of 70.62 meters, a beam of 6.2 meters and a draft of 5.8 meters. They incorporate four MTU 12V 396 SE84 diesel engines, with a maximum power of 3,909 hp each, achieving a maximum speed of 21 knots. With a cruising speed of 8 knots, its range is 6,000 nautical miles. The submarines can dive to a depth of 400 meters and require a crew of 32. They incorporate six 533mm torpedo tubes, which can fire F21 torpedoes and an SM-39 Exocet or MANSUP anti-ship missile.
