French President Emmanuel Macron is furious about the cancelled Australian Submarine deal. His foreign minister calls the deal with the US “a betrayal” and calls ambassador to Canberra and Washington DC to show the discontent. He also receives reactions to actions.
The UK is in partnership with the US on the Australian deal. It did not receive a major reaction from Paris but demonstrated its position by hailing the agreement with the continent. Russia, however, has an unexpected reaction to France. One of the Russian embassies, the Russian embassy in South Africa said on Twitter, “France is angered by Australia’s buying US submarines while cancelling the French-Australian contract. Isn’t that the same thing that happened in 2014 when France refused to deliver the “Mistral” ships to Russia in violation of an earlier agreement? What goes around comes around.”
Those two Mistral are sold to Egypt with an agreement with Russia while Russia received compensation. France refused to sell the ships to Russia as a reaction to the Russian led invasion of Crimea.
