Kathimerini reported that the Greek Army is considering purchasing the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) to enhance the capabilities of its rocket artillery. This step comes as part of Greece’s efforts to modernise its defence system, especially after drawing lessons from the Ukraine war, where rocket artillery proved effective in targeting long-range targets. According to the newspaper, the Greek Army is conducting a comprehensive study to evaluate all available tactical ballistic missile options, including the PrSM.
This study includes assessing the potential benefits and costs of the acquisition and integration process with existing Greek systems. Kathimerini revealed the intention of a Greek military delegation to visit the United States in the coming weeks at the invitation of the American side to observe live fire exercises for the American HIMARS system, with a focus on the PrSM missile in action. The article said using the PrSM missile necessitates modernising the current Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). Therefore, the Greek Army is considering two options: At an anticipated cost of €1.1 billion ($1.18 billion), it will upgrade two-thirds of its fleet of 36 MLRS rigs to A2 level. Only one-third of the fleet was updated, with new missiles acquired in parallel.
The PrSM missile has an innovative design and a range of over 400 kilometres, making it a viable replacement for the Greek Army’s current tactical missile systems.
Both the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and the M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) can launch the PrSM.
The purchase of the PrSM missile is part of Greece’s aggressive efforts to modernise its defence capabilities, which are particularly important given escalating regional tensions.
