Greece to Co-produce Leopard Tanks

According to Die Welt, there are plans for Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann KMW to produce Leopard tanks with Greek company Metka. The publication claims that the war in Ukraine and the complex campaign of circular exchange of weapons systems led to a significant project to start. The article says, “It is about the possibility of additional co-production or modernisation of hundreds of older Leopard tanks in Greece” Die Welt has also asked about the production claims to KMW. The company confirmed the talks with Metka but did not provide further details.

KMW stated that discussions are centred on Leopard 1A5 and Leopard 2. It is possible to say that Germany and Greece have some modernisation plans for Leopard 1A5 tanks in Greece as well as and plan to produce the Leopard 2 tank’s steel hull.

However, the lengthy report also mentions Chancellor Olaf Soltz’s upcoming visit to Greece on October 27. In addition to the KMW group for Leopard tanks, Rheinmetall appears to be interested in Greece because it “pushes” for the purchase of its KF41 Lynx by the Hellenic army.
