Italian Navy plans to acquire three unmanned submarines, known as the BlueWhale, from Israeli company Israel Aerospace Industry [IAI].

This mini-submarine weighs 5.5 tonnes and is 10.9 metres in length and 1.12 metres in diameter. It can operate at depths of up to 300 m while maintaining a speed of 2-3 knots. Its amazing characteristic is its ability to function independently for 30 days. Its modular payload consists of a complex array of electroacoustic, electrooptical, and radar sensors, as well as communication devices.
BlueWhale fully encapsulates the vast powers of acoustic reconnaissance. Using sonar, this sophisticated system spans several tens of metres and is carried by the extraordinary BlueWhale.
