Italy Replaces Typhoon Tranche 1 with 24 Tranche 4/5 Jets

The Italian Ministry of Defence is preparing to add 24 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to replace the first series of Tranche 1 aircraft. 

The Italian Ministry of Defence, on July 4, 2024, requested government approval for the acquisition and renewal of technical and logistical support for the entire Typhoon fleet. The document, which lacks detailed information, indicates that the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee and the Balance Committee will review the proposal. The decision is expected to be made on August 13. 

 The new Typhoon Tranche 4/5 info fleet will fill two squadrons, replacing the old fleet built in 2002-2008. The new fleet of Typhoons is expected to meet Next Generation (NG) standards, featuring a range of advanced technologies. 

These include a new Large Area Display (LAD), an advanced mission computer, a high-performance AESA CAPTOR-E Mk2 (ECRS Mk2) radar, an improved electronic self-protection system, and the ability to control loyal wingman drones. It added that the Italian Air Force was considering the option of a Typhoon jet-based electronic warfare aircraft.
