Japan Acquires 32 Armoured Vehicles for $218 million

Japan has announced that by 2024, it will develop and procure two new armoured vehicles based on the in-service Type-16 (8 x 8). The Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) will procure two new vehicles based on the Type 16 8×8 wheeled Mobile Combat Vehicle (MCV). The Type-16 MCV incorporates a 105mm gun for anti-tank missions and infantry support. The second vehicle will be a mortar carrier behind the front line. Japan wants 24 combat vehicles, with a budget of $164 million, and eight mortar carriers, with a budget of $54.2 million. MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) will develop and produce the vehicles. Deliveries should begin in 2027 and be completed in 2028.
