Marder Claim for Ukraine

Marder Claim for Ukraine

The Western Countries supplied weapons, ammunition and other required aid to Ukraine from the beginning of the Russian aggression. According to local media, the German Federal Government would like to procure Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV).

After the U.S. announcement for Bradleys, another claim came from Germany. But there is no official confirmation yet. German media alleged that the new armoured vehicle package would also include Gepard Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Guns (SPAAG) as well. First Marders are expected to be in Ukraine during the first quarter of 2023.

West Germany developed, produced and took into service Marders in the early 1970s. A high number of platforms are known that are in long-term storage conditions. It it possible to say refurbishment may be required for platforms before front-line service. Manufacturer Rheinmetall had around 100 IFVs in stock. 40 of them were delivered to Greece in line with Ringtauch (Ring Exchange) Program. There are still 60 Marders in depots waiting to be prepared to battle and upgraded.
