Norway Orders New NASAMS AD Systems

Norway Orders New NASAMS AD Systems

As reported by Shepard Media, the new order is worth $130 million, and the deliveries are expected to be completed in 2026 or 2027.

Gro Jære, Norwegian Defence Material Agency Director, has summarised the new order: “For us, it is important to support Ukraine with the necessary material, while at the same time we must ensure a well-armed Norway.”.

NASAMS is among Ukraine’s most frequently supplied air defence systems, alongside German Gepard 35 mm self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and the U.S.-made MIM-104 Patriot. Aside from these, the West has also made somewhat improvised solutions such as FrankenSAM, an integration of RIM-7 Sea Sparrow air defence missiles on Ukrainian Buk SAM launchers, and U.K.’s surface-launched ASRAAM short-range air-to-air missiles on Supacat 6x6 vehicle.

The latest version of NASAMS, NASAMS 3, has the capability to fire three types of missiles. In addition to AIM-120 AMRAAM, AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range missiles and AMRAAM-ER missiles can be fired from NASAMS 3. AMRAAM-ER combines the AMRAAM guidance section and warhead with a larger rocket motor from Nammo to extend the range.
