Russia Starts T-14 Armata MBT Serial Production

Russia has started the serial production of the T-14 Armata Main Battle Tank (MBT), which might be deployed in the war in Ukraine in the future.Rostec CEO Sergei Chemezov said TASS that serially produced T-14 tanks had been delivered to the Russian Army. He declined to say how many had been transferred to date. On the other hand, an official said in 2021 that more than 40 serial T-14 Armata tanks would be delivered after 2023.

Chemezov stated that T-14s are superior to current MBTs but are more expensive. So, Russian forces may continue to deploy T-90 tanks in Ukraine. “The Armata is a little expensive in general,” explains Chemezov. “In terms of functionality, it is far superior to existing tanks but is too expensive, so the Army can’t use it now (in Ukraine). “It’s easier for them to buy the same T-90,” he was quoted as saying by TASS.

Ahead of serial production, Russia built about two dozen pre-production tanks to undergo trials, including a brief stint last year in Ukraine. Although limited and far from the main operating areas, the tanks were deployed for several months.
