Russian Army Receives Modernised Msta-S SPGs

ROSTEC has announced that the new version of 2S19 Msta-S, 2S19M1, will soon be delivered for deployment in Ukraine. Msta-S is among the most common 152 mm self-propelled guns in the Russian Army’s inventory. The upgrade consists of the capability to fire Kransopol-M laser-guided rounds. The laser designation can be done by personnel or UAVs that can paint the target. Other improvements include an improved engine and the integration of GLONASS navigation systems. Kransopol-M munitions saw limited but effective use against armoured vehicles during the war. Being an entirely new round rather than a guidance kit, Kransopol-M features large fins to achieve better glide and manoeuvre performance. This is important when engaging moving targets. Previously, the Russian news agency RIA reported that mass production of the newer 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV SPGs had commenced, and the first units were planned to be delivered before the end of 2023. 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV is developed as a successor to 2S19 Msta-S 152 mm SPGs. Improvements in the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV include a new gun expected to offer a longer range and a radar to measure the trajectory of fired rounds.
