Spain Trains Ukraine on the Hawk Air Defence Systems
The Spanish Ministry of Defence stated on January 13, 2023, that 225 Ukrainian soldiers are now in Spain. They will be trained to use the Hawk air defence missile system donated by Spain. Ukrainian soldiers arrived at Torrejón Air Base near Madrid. Soldiers will attend the basic combat training module held at the “Toledo Training Command” based on the Infantry Academy of Spain. The training will be held for five weeks.

The military training program will train about 400 Ukrainian soldiers every two months. It was previously known that in October 2022, the Spanish government had decided to deliver anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine through Hawk and Aspide medium-range surface-to-air missiles. The two air defence systems will be taken from the inventory of the Spanish Armed Forces. Reportedly, the Spanish military has 38 MIM-23B Hawk units and 13 Aspide/Skyguard air defence missile systems. The Hawk SAM is a medium-range surface-to-air missile developed by the United States in the 1950s. It consists of several main components, including the launch vehicle, radar, control centre and missiles. Hawk missiles are usually launched from mobile launch vehicles, such as trucks or tracked vehicles. The MIM-23B missile has a range of 40 km and a maximum altitude of around 30 km. This system is designed to destroy aircraft and cruise missiles.
