The Russian navy has launched its new Borei-A ballistic missile submarine.

Sevmash Shipyard, a division of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), has launched on December 25th the Russian navy's new Project 955A Borei-A-Class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN).

In December of 2014, the submarine was laid down. The new submarine will begin sea trials after being placed on water. According to officials, if everything goes as planned, the commissioning and handover to the navy will take place before the end of December 2022.

Knyaz Vladimir, the first Borei-A class submarine, was delivered last June after several delays due to deficiencies discovered during sea trials.

Eight modernised Borei-A submarines are planned for construction at the Sevmash yard in Severodvinsk.

Two new nuclear-powered submarines, Knyaz Oleg and Novosibirsk, built by Sevmash, joined the Russian navy last week.
