The U.S. Air Force has published on May 20th an announcement on behalf of Air Force Materiel Command AFMC, which delivers and supports agile war-fighting capabilities to the U.S. Air Force. The announcement includes, “Procurement, repair, and maintenance of F-4 parts and procurement of J-79 parts.” The aircraft has a twin J-79 engine.
The attachment informs that the announcement “is not a solicitation, but rather a Sources Sought Synopsis to determine potential sources for information and planning purposes only.”
The further notification gives more details about the research; “The purpose of this Sources Sought Synopsis is to conduct market research to determine if responsible sources exist and to assist in determining if this effort can be considered competitive and/or a Total Small Business Set-Aside. “
It states that “The Government will use this information to determine the best acquisition strategy for this procurement. The Government is interested in all small businesses, to include Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned, Hubzone, and Women-Owned Small Business concerns.”
The announcement underlines that the “notification is issued for information and planning purposes only and does not constitute a solicitation. Responses will not be returned.”
The Program Overview also states that “The Legacy Training Aircraft International Branch, is anticipating the award of a contract for F-4 Contractor Logistics Support in the areas of; Procurement of F-4 spare parts,Procurement of J-79 engine spares, F-4 aircraft maintenance support, F-4 commodity repair and return,F-4 minor modifications to include design, installation, and test. It adds, “This Sources Sought Synopsis is intended to provide the Government with an understanding of the technology and resources available within industry to support this effort.” This four-year effort is planned to begin in Fiscal Year 2022.
USAF has converted its F-4 Phantom fighter fleet to supersonic QF-4, a reusable full-scale, remotely piloted aerial target. The QF-4 provides a full-scale target for air-to-air weapons system evaluation, development and testing at Tyndall Air Force Base. The modified F-4 became the QF-4. It is the successor to the QF-106 in the Air Force aerial target inventory. U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy are primary users of the aircraft.
Turkey, Greece and the Republic of Korea (ROK) have F-4 in the inventory.
The Turkish Air Force received a total of 192 F-4 aircraft with different versions from various countries. 54 aircraft are modernised and in use as F-4E 2020 Terminator.
The Hellenic Air Force ordered brand new F-4E Phantoms in 1971. The Force has 33 F-4E PI2000 in the inventory.
The Republic of Korea Air Force purchased its first batch of secondhand USAF F-4D Phantoms in 1968 under the “Peace Spectator” program. The F-4Ds continued to be delivered until 1988. The “Peace Pheasant II” program also provided new-built and former USAF F-4Es. ROK has 71 F-4E in the inventory.
