Thyssenkrupp and Thales to Modernise Greece’s Frigates

Thyssenkrupp will modernise the platform, while Thales will modernise the combat management systems with TACTICOS. Additionally, ATLAS ELEKTRONIK will provide new communication systems as part of the planned Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU). The modernisation will be applied in a Greek shipyard.

The agreement between the partners was signed on 12 December 2023. The order is expected to be received in 2024.

German Thyssenkrupp is the manufacturer of MEKO-200 and other MEKO series of warships worldwide, while the Thales is based in France, one of Greece’s leading suppliers of military equipment.

Greece has recently expressed interest in having its MEKO-200HN frigates modernised. The plan was announced by The Greek Deputy Minister of Defence, Ioannis Kefalogiannis, in December 2023.

In addition to the MEKO-200HN MLU and French Belharra frigate acquisition, buying the decommissioned Freedom-class LCS from the U.S. was brought to the table in the Greek Parliament. The ships were decommissioned early because of frequent gearbox malfunctions and the burden of maintenance.

The Hellenic Navy also expects to take delivery of three MH-60R ASW helicopters in February 2024.
