U.K. MoD Announces Budget for Shipbuilding Programme

U.K. MoD Announces Budget for Shipbuilding Programme

The 16-ship package includes eight Type 26 frigates, five Type 31 frigates, and three Fleet Solid Support Ships. The shipyards to build the ships are located in Rosyth, Scotland;  Govan, Scotland; and Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Type 26 frigate is designed for anti-submarine warfare and high-intensity air defence but can adapt to changing missions, from disaster relief and humanitarian aid operations to embarking military forces or supporting diving operations. Construction of all eight of the Type 26 frigates is expected to be completed by the mid-2030s.

Type 31 will replace the ageing Type 23 frigates of the Royal Navy as the general-purpose frigate. The ships will also sport a large hangar that can be used to deploy boats and carriage containers. The ships will use Thales NS110 4D AESA Radar.

Fleet Solid Support Ship will deliver crucial munitions, supplies and provisions to the Royal Navy’s and allied warships. The ships will provide logistical and operational support, including counter-piracy and counter-terrorism missions. The first ship’s production is planned to begin in 2025.
