U.S. Approves Sale of AUKUS Training Systems to Australia

Australia’s Trilateral AUKUS Pillar I program request includes training devices, personnel training, planning, and Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) services, support equipment, training software/courseware, supply chain and industrial base support, and other related products or services.
In the following decades, Australia, the U.S., and the U.K. launched the AUKUS program to gain a nuclear submarine (SSN) capability. The program goes beyond acquiring SSNs and includes years of training and local capability development. For this reason, the program is separated into three phases.
The first phase involves Australian sailors serving onboard American and British SSNs to gain the needed know-how to operate the submarines. The second phase involves acquiring three to five Virginia-class SSNs in the 2030s. Finally, Australia will commission the SSN-AUKUS based on a British Astute-class fitted with US-made systems in the 2040s.
