Ukraine Arms Its USVs With Grad Artillery Rockets

Ukrainian MoD has announced the integration of Grad 122 mm artillery rocket launchers on its Sea Baby kamikaze USVs. The launchers are fixed and forward-facing. This indicates Ukraine intends to use the highly common and cheap Grad rockets to inflict lead damage on its kamikaze USVs. The usage likely involves firing at the range that has been pre-measured, as seen on the ground-based test. Grad rockets with unitary warheads usually carry HE-FRAG warheads weighing 17 kg to 25 kg. The damage from these rockets can soften the target ship by damaging the structure, increasing the chances of sinking upon the kamikaze USV’s impact. Additionally, the rockets can be used to conduct attacks on multiple targets with each USV. Previously, the Sea Baby USV was spotted firing smaller unguided rockets at intercepting Russian patrol boats during an encounter. In summary, Ukraine seemingly wants to take another step in up-arming its kamikaze USVs that have already caused major havoc on the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Another effort for armed USVs includes the integration of R-73 air-to-air missiles on a larger USV, pointing out intentions to put Russian helicopters in the risk zone as well.
