The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) has returned to Naval Station Norfolk, completing Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) at Norfolk Naval Shipyard on December 17.
This maintenance period includes modernisation, structural repairs, and preservation work, encompassing tanks, voids, weapons elevators, flight deck and hangar bay areas, the main mast, and the ship's exterior. Repairs addressed hull maintenance, mechanical and electrical infrastructure, aviation engine hatch safety station modification, and the aeroplane crane. The Combat Systems team upgraded a pivotal computer network, enhancing communication connectivity and serving as the backbone for system integration throughout the ship.
Following sea trials, USS Harry S. Truman is poised to commence workups in preparation for its upcoming deployment in early 2024. Naval warfare journalist Chris Cavas notes that, among carriers, only JOHN C STENNIS (CVN 74) remains in shipyards. The CVN 74 undergoes her midlife Refuel and Complex Overhaul (RCOH), which is expected to be completed by 2025
