Vietnam to Supply K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer from ROK

Vietnam plans to acquire the K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) developed and manufactured by Hanwha Aerospace's companyHanwha Defence, Republic of Korea, for the People’s Army of Vietnam. Vietnam wants to modernise its inventory with new weapon systems while harmonising them and making them more mobile. During the ‘11th Korea-Vietnam Defence Strategic Dialogue’ in Hanoi on April 23, 2024, Vietnam’s Deputy Defence Minister Hoang Xuan Chien conveyed a desire to buy K9 self-propelled artillery. In a press release, the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Defence announced the intention. Vietnamese Deputy Defence Minister Chien inspected several Korean weapon systems and indicated a desire to strengthen defence industry collaboration. This involves adopting Korean weapon systems such as the K9 self-propelled artillery cannon and requesting assistance from the Republic of Korea government. The Vietnamese People’s Army seeks a new artillery system to replace the outdated weapons currently in its arsenal. The system includes a 155mm M114 towed ballistic missile medium cannon and a 105mm M101 ballistic missile light cannon. The Vietnam People’s Army reportedly intends to acquire 108 155mm self-propelled howitzer units.
