Azerbaijan Pauses Military Operations in Nagorno-Karabakh

Following the commitment of Armenian separatists to cease hostilities, Azerbaijan suspends its military actions in Nagorno-Karabakh. On Wednesday, Azerbaijan halted its military operations in the restive Nagorno-Karabakh region. This decision came after Armenian separatists agreed to lay down their arms and engage in reintegration talks.

The cessation of hostilities was possible thanks to the mediation of Russian peacekeepers. This agreement came just a day after Azerbaijan launched the “anti-terrorist operation” in the region.

The separatists announced a “complete dismantlement” of their troops, including withdrawing Armenian army units. All this after two previous confrontations between Armenia and Azerbaijan since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Azerbaijan’s Defence Ministry stipulated that “all weapons and heavy weaponry must be handed over.” This process will be carried out under the surveillance of 2,000 Russian troops maintaining peace in the region.

Talks on the reintegration of Nagorno-Karabakh into Azerbaijan are scheduled on Thursday in Yevlakh.
