Mark Rutte named future NATO Secretary General

After months of ambiguity, NATO’s future leader has been elected by its member states—Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to succeed Jens Stoltenberg in October. The North Atlantic Council’s 32 member states have named Jens Stoltenberg’s successor. In a statement released on June 26, NATO stated that they appointed Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg. Mark Rutte will assume his functions as Secretary General from October 1 2024, when Jens Stoltenberg’s term expires after ten years at the helm of the Alliance.
