Norway Allows Direct Arms Sales to Ukraine

Norway Allows Direct Arms Sales to Ukraine

This decision marks an essential step in Norway’s efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s defences against Russia. However, Norway will continue to follow the sales provided they meet strict criteria for verified needs and end-user control. According to an official statement from the Norwegian government, this action was driven by the need to improve security for Norway and the wider European region.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide clarified that export permits for these direct sales will be issued case-by-case after conducting a thorough assessment to ensure compliance with Norway’s strict export control regulations. “We must plan for the possibility that the illegal war of aggression may be prolonged,” he said.

Norway has delivered the NASAMS surface-to-air missile system to Ukraine.

Norway has donated the M270B1 multi-barreled rocket launcher system, the Leopard 2A4 Main Battle Tank, and the Mistral 2 MANPADS anti-aircraft missile system. Norway will also support training Ukrainian pilots. The country will send F-16s to Denmark.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store announced on December 13 that $1.8 billion in military and humanitarian aid would be needed by the end of 2023.
