STM’s Debris-Ignoring Radar DAR Serves Turkish Firefighters

Through the wall radar (DAR), DAR, developed by Turkish STM for imaging behind walls and debris, has entered service with Turkish firefighters through its new configuration. Turkish defence companies convert their products for civilian use and provide the technology for alternative needs. Denizli’s firefighting department has delivered the radar. This marks the first time a firefighting department has acquired such equipment. STM CEO Özgür Güleryüz stated that the firm aims to supply the other firefighting departments in Turkiye and national or multi-national search and rescue teams. The portable radar was designed for special operations, but it was extensively used in disaster relief efforts following the large-scale earthquake that occurred on the 6th of February, 2023. Search and rescue personnel made use of the radar to locate those who were under the debris.

Thanks to its deep-imaging capabilities, DAR has played a pivotal role in rescuing more than 50 citizens from debris. DAR originally made its debut with security forces, particularly taking a role in counter-terrorism operations to provide situational awareness to the operators before breaching or engaging. In order to see behind visual clutter, the radar utilises ultra-long band RF waves. This allows for detection behind at up to 22 meters depth. DAR, weighing 6.5 kg, can work for up to four hours. Thanks to the design and weight, one person can operate the system.
