Ukraine Received Javelin ATGMs from the US

Ukrainian Defence Ministry announced on social media that the third, final batch of international security assistance, including “Javelin” anti-tank guided missiles and first aid kits, reached Kyiv. The ministry stated that the worth of aid is $ 60 million. In September, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on the international community to impose an arms embargo on Ukraine.

Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine Oleksandr Nosov, Commander of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Brigadier General Tetyana Ostashchenko, Chief of the Main Logistics Department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Lieutenant General Mykola Shevtsov, and the US Embassy Army and Defence Attaché Air Colonel Brittany Stewart received the third batch of additional security assistance from the United States at Boryspil International Airport. The military aid was carried out with a private airfreight company.

Deputy Minister Nosov expressed appreciation to the American side for the technological means supplied, which considerably enhanced the capabilities of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. “Today, we received another board of assistance from the United States as a result of agreements between the Presidents of Ukraine and the United States Volodymyr Zelensky and Joe Biden,” said Alexander Nosov.

Colonel Brittany Stewart, for her part, emphasised that the US unwaveringly supports Ukraine and stands shoulder to shoulder in protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. “The United States is assisting Ukraine in building the Armed Forces, which includes logistical assistance and training from the tactical to the strategic level. We want to see Ukraine on the path to NATO, a peaceful and free country,” she added.

Lieutenant General Shevtsov, for his part, observed that this military-technical support comprises a high-tech and critical lack of equipment, weapons, and ammunition. According to him, prior supplies of funding have already increased counter-battery and anti-tank fighting and intelligence capabilities. “Today, we received a batch of anti-tank missile systems “Javelin” with ammunition. We also received ammunition for the weapons we have under NATO calibre. The weapons will be transferred to bases and warehouses, registered and transferred to the military for use, including for units of the Joint Forces Operation, - said Lieutenant General Shevtsov, emphasising that these weapons bring Ukraine closer to NATO member states.

Brigadier General Tetyana Ostashchenko, Commander of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, added that the United States shipment also contains personal protection equipment - first aid kits. She emphasised that military medical training in Ukraine’s Armed Forces is conducted following NATO standards.

The FGM-148 Javelin ATGM

The FGM-148 Javelin is a man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank missile. It uses automatic infrared guidance that allows the user to seek cover immediately after launch, as opposed to wire-guided systems which require the user to guide the weapon throughout the engagement. The Javelin"s HEAT warhead is capable of defeating modern tanks by hitting them from above where their armour is thinnest (see top-attack), and is also useful against fortifications in a direct attack flight.
