Greece Trims “Blinken Package”

Greece has refused to buy second-hand Freedom-class LCS and M2A2 Bradley IFVs due to the ill state of the equipment included in the Blinken Package. According to eKathimerini, Greece’s main complaint is the colossal maintenance costs of second-hand IFVs and LCS. While M2A2 Bradley is a combat-proven system, a badly maintained platform is always bound to bring massive maintenance costs and lost time.

However, Freedom-class LCS adds the issue of being a ship widely known to have experienced major gearbox malfunctions due to the un-refined propulsion system design. The problems with the propulsion system had gone to the point where the U.S. Navy had to retire ships that could be considered fresh and continue with the less problematic Independence-class LCS. However, Greece will continue with the 20 F-35 fighters. The National Security Council of Greece decided that priority would be given to F-35s and Camcopter S-100 UAVs for use on warships.
