Japan Tests Its New Hypersonic Glide Weapon in the U.S. TurDef

The new hypersonic glide weapon developed by Japan has been tested on U.S. soil, most probably to evade Chinese observation by radars and alternative sensors.

Japanese MoD announced the new firing test of the hypersonic boost-glide weapon for island defence near the end of January 2025. The weapon was first tested in August 2024.

A more interesting release by the Japanese MoD is the location of the test, which is the U.S. instead of Japan. Considering the value of hypersonic missiles and China’s possible long-range observation capabilities by radar or satellites, Japan likely considered the U.S. a more suitable location.

The U.S. and Japan have already collaborated on various strategic projects such as SM-3 Block IIA exo-atmospheric interceptor for warships, local production for Patriot PAC-3 missiles, and, more recently, cooperation on the upcoming ASEV destroyers.

Another project involving hypersonics in Japan is developing a multi-purpose railgun to be deployed on warships (ASEV is being considered) and land-based artillery units.
