NATO deploys a Patriot battery from Ramstein Air Base to Incirlik after Iran launched three MRBMs targeting Türkiye during retaliatory strikes against the US and Israel.
Security measures at Türkiye’s Incirlik Air Base have been reinforced as NATO deploys an additional Patriot air defence battery from Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
According to a statement delivered during the Turkish Ministry of National Defence’s weekly press briefing held at Incirlik, NATO allocated the Patriot system through alliance mechanisms to strengthen missile defence coverage around the base.
Ministry Spokesperson Rear Admiral Zeki Aktürk announced that the battery was transferred from Ramstein to Incirlik. The deployment comes shortly after another Patriot battery was deployed near the Kürecik radar site in Malatya last week.
The decision to hold the weekly press briefing directly at Incirlik also appeared to carry a political message. The Ministry recently emphasised that Incirlik is a Turkish base amid recurring narratives suggesting the facility is not under Turkish control. The Ministry even shared a photo on social media stating: “Incirlik is a Turkish base.”
Air defence capabilities at the base have relied partly on Spanish-operated Patriot systems since 2015. These batteries primarily consist of Patriot PAC-2 launchers, which are effective against aircraft and cruise missiles but offer more limited performance against ballistic missile threats.
While the exact configuration of the newly deployed battery has not been officially disclosed, the reinforcement is intended to strengthen protection against potential ballistic missile threats following recent regional developments. TurDef assesses that the newly deployed systems are likely to be PAC-3 MSE due to their technical suitability for ballistic missile defence.
Incirlik is widely known as a strategic air base hosting NATO operations. The base is also considered strategically valuable due to its location. However, Turkish authorities have repeatedly stated that Turkish airspace, land and territorial waters will not be used for operations against Iran. As a result, the base is not being used by the United States for any military activity targeting Iran.
The deployment indicates that NATO now treats the recent missile incidents not as isolated events but as a developing regional missile threat requiring additional protection of critical military facilities in Türkiye.
