PIRANHA 6x6 Set to Succeed Germany’s FENNEK 4x4 ARVs

PIRANHA 6x6, produced by GDELS, has been chosen to succeed the FENNEK 4x4 as the German Army’s main armoured reconnaissance vehicle under the name LUCHS 2.

The German Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment (BAAINBw) has tasked General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) with supplying PIRANHA 6x6 armoured vehicles to the German Army’s Reconnaissance Corps, localised as “LUCHS 2.” The contract, valued at around €3 billion, covers vehicles built on the PIRANHA 6x6 platform, which includes amphibious capabilities to replace FENNEK 4x4.

LUCHS 2 includes reduced acoustic and thermal signatures and integrates networked sensor technologies.

Compared to FENNEK 4x4, LUCHS 2 notably has more firepower thanks to the turret armed with an autocannon in addition to a more modern electronics/sensors package. As a 6x6 armoured vehicle, LUCHS 2 also offers better survivability.
