Covering AIM-120D3 AMRAAMs and supporting equipment, the U.S. State Department has approved a prospective Foreign Military Sale to Poland for $1.33 billion.
The U.S. Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has formally notified Congress of a probable Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Poland for 400 AIM-120D3 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM). The package comprises a variety of related logistical, software, and maintenance support, one instrumented test vehicle; and sixteen guide sections.
Enhancing Polish Air Defence and NATO Integration
According to DSCA, the suggested sale would provide strong air-to-air engagement capabilities for national and ally operations, improving Poland's capacity to defend against present and developing threats. The AIM-120D3 is the most modern AMRAAM type now employed by the U.S. Air Force, featuring a longer range, enhanced guidance, and updated electronic protection.
The Deal also includes:
• Control sections, containers, and support equipment
• CMBRE test systems and encryption devices (KGV-135A)
• Software packages and classified documentation
• Engineering and logistics support from the U.S. government and RTX (formerly Raytheon)
Strategic Significance
Particularly because of Russia's ongoing hostility in Ukraine, Poland is raising defence expenditures with the transaction coming at a time of growing regional tensions. Complementing its growing F-35A Lightning II and F-16 aircraft fleet, the AIM-120D3's features will provide Poland with a notable qualitative advantage in aerial combat.

The Deal emphasises Poland's increasing position as a frontline state in NATO's eastern flank and the strengthening military-industrial links between Warsaw and Washington, D.C. Although the AIM-120D3 is now the most powerful AMRAAM type in use by the United States, the country is also working on the longer-range AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM) to replace it eventually.
