Romania Orders K9 SPH and K10 ARVs from Hanwha

Romania has ordered 59 K9 Thunder 155 mm tracked SPH and 36 K10 ammunition resupply vehicles (ARV) from Hanwha for a price tag of $1 billion. Indonesia-based Airspace Review reported the purchase of Romanian MoD to modernise its firepower on land.

The contract includes ammunition and technical support, adding to the platform acquisition price. ROK is among the major manufacturers of 155 mm ammunition globally. K9 Thunder previously participated in Romania’s bid to acquire modern SPHs. The SPH is used by Poland, Finland, India, Norway, Estonia, and Turkey as the locally-produced T-155 Fırtına.

Turkiye is also developing the more advanced version of T-155 as Fırtına 2 or Fırtına NG with improved fire control and mast-mounted RCWS. The K10 ARV supplies ammunition to K9 Thunder as the main support vehicle by inserting a probe that sends the ammunition into the turret. K9 and K10 were also offered to Egypt recently, with a special variant of K10 added to the offer. K11, unlike K10, acts as a detection and fire control vehicle to direct K9 more swiftly in counter-artillery fire scenarios.
