Turkish Army Uses KORKUT SPAAG For Fire Support

Turkish MoD released footage of KORKUT SPAAG being utilised for fire support against PKK terrorists in the Claw-Lock operation zone in Iraq.

In most cases, fire support in ground forces is a mission left to tanks, IFVs, and artillery, but sometimes, the potential of air defence weaponry in said missions is brought up.

KORKUT 35 mm SPAAG's use for fire support in the Turkish Army's counter-terrorism operations is one recent example of such a situation. Thanks to being compatible with HE-I ammunition alongside ATOM airburst ammunition of ASELSAN, the dual-barreled SPAAG with a combined fire rate of 1100 RPM can sometimes be more effective at suppressing enemy personnel than tanks.

This isn't the Turkish Army's first use of an air defence weapon for anti-personnel fire support. A Bofors 40 mm AA gun was seen to be modified with thermal sights for the same end.

Historically speaking, there have been other cases like Russia using ZSU-23-4 23 mm SPAAGs in the Soviet-Afghanistan War and Chechen Wars against ground forces due to the immense fire rate and lethality of 23x152 mm quad autocannons compared to that of machine gun emplacements.
