U.S. Advisor: Abrams were not Useful in Ukraine’s Frontlines

U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that Abrams MBTs were not effective in the Ukrainian frontline against Russian aggression.

Sullivan stated that the Abrams tanks sent by the U.S. to Ukraine are not the most useful piece of equipment for them in this fight, saying, “Those Abrams tanks units are actually undermined.” Sullivan emphasised that this assessment reflects the conclusions of the U.S. military.

Ukrainian military officials had earlier indicated that the Abrams tanks sent to Ukraine were missing depleted uranium armour and had been removed from modern combat modules and communication systems. Ukrainian officials announced that some of the tanks were inoperable upon delivery and required repairs by Ukrainian forces to become usable.

In January 2023, U.S. President Joe Biden declared that the U.S. would provide 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine to assist in forming a tank battalion.

Approximately 200 Ukrainian soldiers are currently training on Abrams tanks in Germany with U.S. guidance in preparation for their deployment. Despite these efforts, the effectiveness of the tanks in Ukraine is regarded as questionable due to the unique demands of the conflict.
