U.S. Army Works on a Decoy to Mimic Helicopters

The U.S. Army is planning for a fixed-wing UAV to mimic the radar signature of attack or transport helicopters to add a layer of deception to operations.

Following the abandonment of the FARA programme and steering towards incorporating UAVs into the aviation wing, the U.S. Army has started looking for a decoy UAV to return a radar signal identical to a typical helicopter, Zone Militaire reported.

With the decoy, the U.S. Army plans to deceive or put the enemy air defence assets in a dilemma to pave the way for helicopters.

A fixed-wing UAV capable of emulating the signature of a helicopter on radar not only requires form manipulation but also flight characteristics identical to a typical helicopter to be convincing. Thus, a very low stall speed and a maximum speed to match helicopters should be anticipated.
