The US State Department approved a major sale of FGM-148F Javelin man-portable ATGMs and their launchers to Poland at an estimated cost of $780 million.
The approved sale to Poland announced on DSCA with an estimated cost of $780 million includes 2506 FGM-148F ATGMs and 253 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units (LWCLU).
FGM-148F is the latest operational variant of the FGM-148 Javelin line of man-portable ATGMs. The FGM-148F missile swaps the tandem-shaped charge warhead for a new one that adds a pre-fragmented casing to improve anti-personnel effect. The missile, using an IIR seeker, is launched from the launch/command unit and can reach a range of four kilometres.
On the other hand, the LWCLU is the successor of the baseline command/launch unit with significantly reduced weight and new optical systems.
Poland, bordering Ukraine, is among the countries in proximity to the war. The Eastern European country has made a considerable investment in ground-based weaponry such as MLRS, MBTs, and C-UAS systems to defend against a possible Russian incursion. Javelin could be regarded as a part of building up defences, given the large amount of missiles to be procured.
