This is a tribute to the fallen in the Falklands/Malvinas War, which is remembered every year on April 2. The Malvinas Islands formally celebrate the Day of the War Veterans and the Fallen. The Malvinas Islands are most often known in English-speaking countries as the Falklands. The holiday honours Argentina's soldiers who lost their lives in the Falklands War, which began on April 2, 1982, when Argentina occupied the islands. Malvinas Day was first celebrated in 2001. It superseded the June 10 "Sovereignty over Malvinas Islands" Day, which had previously marked the appointment of Luis Vernet as governor of the Islands by Buenos Aires in 1832.
