Azerbaijan National Flag Day is celebrated annually on November 9th to commemorate the adoption of the country’s tricolour flag in 1918.

The flag was first introduced by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on November 9th 1918, symbolising the nation’s independence and identity.

It features three horizontal stripes—blue, red, and green—with a white crescent and eight-pointed star in the centre.

The blue represents Azerbaijan’s Turkic heritage, red stands for progress and modernity, and green symbolises Islam.

When Azerbaijan was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1920, the tricolour was replaced by a Soviet-style flag.

After the collapse of the USSR, the tricolour was restored on February 5th 1991 as the official state flag of independent Azerbaijan.

Recognising its historical importance, President Ilham Aliyev declared November 9th as National Flag Day in 2009.

To mark the occasion, the National Flag Square in Baku was inaugurated on September 1st 2010.

The flagpole at the square once held a Guinness World Record as the tallest in the world, standing 162 meters high.

The massive flag measures 70 by 35 metres and weighs 350 kilograms, proudly overlooking the Caspian Sea.

Each year, citizens gather at the square and across the country for flag-raising ceremonies and patriotic celebrations.

The holiday serves as a tribute to national unity, independence, and pride.

The flag’s design and proportions are enshrined in Article 23 of the Constitution of Azerbaijan, reinforcing its sacred status.

For Azerbaijanis, the tricolour embodies the enduring spirit of sovereignty and the resilience of the nation.
