Brazilian Independence Day or 'Dia da Independência' from Portugal is celebrated on September 7th known as 'Sete de Setembro”. Brazil was Portugal’s colony.

On September 7, 1822, Pedro di Alcântara, the Portuguese King's 23-year-old son, declared independence from Portugal. He announced "Independência ou Morte!" (Independence or Death) along the Ipiranga River in São Paulo.

Brazil has been a Portuguese colony since the sixteenth century. In 1807, France conquered Portugal, and the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil. Brazil achieved equal kingdom status with Portugal in 1815. By 1820, the French had retreated from Portugal and its royal family.

Alcântara, often known as Dom Pedro I, became Brazil's first emperor and governed from 1823 until 1831.

Brazil declared a republic on November 15, 1889, but maintained September 7th as its Independence Day.
