On October 1st 1949 Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic of China from atop Beijing's Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tian'anmen Gate).
On October 1, 1949, a ceremony in Tian'anmen Square established the People's Republic of China (PRC). This brought an end to a brutal civil conflict between the Chinese government and Mao's Chinese Communist Party.
