Originally named Defender of Ukraine Day honours the courage of the defenders of Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity observed on October 14th.
This holiday commemorates and pays respect to everyone who has fought and continues to struggle for Ukraine's state sovereignty. Originally known as Defender of Ukraine Day, the Ukrainian parliament officially changed the holiday's name to Defenders and Defenderesses of Ukraine Day in July 2021 to recognise Ukraine's female defenders.
Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine Day has replaced Defender of the Fatherland Day, which was marked on February 23rd. The earlier celebration was considered a Soviet holiday and was no longer considered proper to commemorate in light of ongoing disagreements with Russia over territories in eastern Ukraine and Crimea.
The date of October 14th was chosen since it coincides with Ukraine's Day of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin.
