The 1992 Constitution was enacted for the Fourth Republic of Ghana on January 7, 1993, after receiving substantial approval in a referendum conducted on April 28, 1992.

The Constitution delineates essential political principles, outlining the framework, processes, authorities, and responsibilities of the government and the organisation of the judiciary and legislature while articulating citizens' fundamental rights and obligations.

January 7 marks the inauguration of new Heads of State in Ghana following elections.

The day aims to recognise Ghana's collective efforts in upholding democracy, the rule of law, and the principles of constitutionalism.

The Fourth Republic has surpassed the duration of the three preceding republics, each terminated by military intervention.

Constitution Day is a recent public holiday observed in Ghana on January 7, 2019. This day is an additional holiday under Section 2 of the Public Holiday Act, 2001 (Act 601).

The newly established holiday aims to reinforce Ghanaians' dedication to the principles of the rule of law, constitutionalism, and democracy.

The day reminds citizens of their collective commitment to maintaining uninterrupted constitutional order.

The establishment of Constitution Day has demoted Republic Day (July 1) from a public holiday to a commemorative observance.
