Constitution Day (Albanian: Dita e Kushtetutës), the constitution of Kosovo was ratified and celebrated on April 9th 2008 and came to effect on June 15th 2008.

This day marks the approval of the country's constitution in 2008.

The Republic of Kosovo is a partially recognised state and disputed region located in the heart of the Balkans in South-east Europe. Following the disintegration of Yugoslavia, ethnic tensions in Serbia exploded into the Kosovo War in 1998.

The fighting led to the foundation of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo.

Martti Ahtisaari was named the leader of the Kosovo status process by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in November 2005.

On February 17th, 2008, the Kosovo assembly unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia "in full accordance with the recommendations of U.N. Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari." It pledged to be a democratic republic and accept all of the Ahtisaari plan's obligations, including the adoption of a new constitution within 120 days.

It is the most significant legal instrument, ensuring the fundamental rights and liberties of all inhabitants of the country.
