After obtaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Askar Akayev took office as President.
In April of 2005, a public revolt known as the "Tulip Revolution" forced President Akayev to resign. The opposition leaders created a coalition, and President Kurmanbek Bakiyev led a new administration.
On April 6th, 2010, civil unrest erupted in Talas following a rally against government corruption and rising living costs.
On April 7th, 2010, the unrest expanded, and enormous anti-government rallies in Bishkek became deadly, killing over 84 people and injuring hundreds more in confrontations with police forces.
A transitional administration assumed power, and Bakiev departed the country shortly after.
Since 2016, the day has become a public holiday.
