1963 marked the beginning of Malaysia's modernisation, which occurred when the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as the former British colony of Singapore, became members of the Federation of Malaya. Malaysia Day marks this event.

During that historical period, the city of Kuala Lumpur, which serves as the capital of Malaysia, was a part of State Selangor. As a result of the signing of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Agreement on January 28th, 1974, Kuala Lumpur emerged as a federal territory under the federal government's jurisdiction. This occurred four days later.

The government of Sabah state handed Labuan over to the federal government in 1984, resulting in the establishment of a second federal territory.

Putrajaya, a new planned city, was established as Malaysia's administrative hub due to the overcrowding in Kuala Lumpur. To accommodate this new metropolis, Selangor was compelled to give up additional territory. In 1999, the seat of government of Malaysia was relocated from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya. Additionally, in 2001, Putrajaya was designated as the third federal territory.

February 1st is observed as a public holiday in all three federal territories.
