Sierra Leone has served as a key staging point for European colonists since the 15th century. The area was supposedly called after a lioness, Sierra Leone, by a Portuguese adventurer.
The British began to play an active role in Sierra Leone, serving as both a trade port for slaves and a location for liberated American slaves to dwell after their departure during the American War of Independence. Freetown, the capital, was established in 1787 as a haven for repatriated former slaves.
