Tajikistan marks Constitution Day on November 6th, celebrating the 1994 adoption of its founding law that unified the country after years of post-Soviet era.

Constitution Day is celebrated in Tajikistan every year on November 6th to honour the adoption of the nation’s Constitution in 1994.

It stands as a symbol of unity, stability, and independence following the country’s turbulent early years.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan declared sovereignty in 1990 and became fully independent in 1991.

The end of Soviet rule, however, unleashed long-suppressed ethnic and regional tensions.

By 1992, the country was engulfed in a civil war that lasted until a ceasefire was reached in late 1994.

Amid the search for peace, Tajik citizens participated in a referendum on November 6th 1994, approving a new Constitution and electing a president.

This Constitution laid the legal and political foundations for the new Republic of Tajikistan.

It emphasised national sovereignty, democratic governance, and protection of citizens’ rights.

The document is widely regarded as a turning point in the country’s modern history.

Since its adoption, the Constitution has been amended twice, in 1999 and 2003, to address political reforms.

Today, Constitution Day is celebrated with official ceremonies, cultural events, and public gatherings nationwide.
